"In a book at the Museum in Stuart, on page 35, it states "WILLOUGHY BLACKARD'
Willoughby was an old veteran of the Revolution who lived for a few years on
Burks Fork. According to his pension application, he was born August 12, 1757
and enlisted in the 4th Regiment of the North carolina Line in 1776. He saw
action in the army under General Washington at Germantown and later was in the
army in the southern theater of the war, being captured at Charleston, SC. Still
later he was with the 6th North Carolina in most of the significant battles
on the southern front: Guilford Courthouse, Camden, and Eutaw Springs. He was
discharged in 1781. (Pension application, recorded in Wythe Orders, 1829-1833,
pg.. 410) He lived for many years in Patrick County, apparently having settled
there from his home county of Bute(?) NC. In 1810 he bought most of the old
Jessop place, together with a tract from Pearson, and settled on Burks Ford
(Grayson, DB 3-6:3-143). In 1814 he sold out and moved away. His last years
were spent in Wythe County."
