1819 Letter From Jeremiah Blackard (Franklin, TN) to William Hargis (Person, NC)

September the 27 - 1819 Tennessee Franklin County

Dear uncle & aunt. I one more take my pen in hand to inform you that we ar all in
a tolerable state of helth at presant for which blesing we are thankfull and hope these lines
may find you in good helth- I have had some misporchens in my family lattely - Jean had a child
bornd dead on the 6 day of this month- it come about a month two soon - She has bin veary
porley but she is as well now as could be expected - I am in hopes this is the last letter that ever
I shall right to you in that countrey - I have heard that you was a going to move this fall
of this countrey - It is a grait sattisfation to me to hear such news - I am in grait hope
of se you in this countrey this fall - I hink if you ever start that I shall se sevial more
of my young friends to wit - Asa Hudgins and brother William cozen John Hudgins
& sister Nancey & brother washington - as you ar a going to move you would be glad to hear
somthing a bout produce crops in this county is not veary good - Corn will sell
hear from teh heap at $1.50 cents - pork will sell hear at a bout $4.50 cents per hundred -
Wheat at 75 cents per bushel - Cotton will sell at a bout $15 per hundred - Salt is
selling at 2 dollars & 60 cents a bushel - By the Barrel and the call 50 lb a bushel -
I saw a man from maury about 2 weeks ago Frances and Allen was well - there is the best
crops in maury that has bin made in 3 years -

Corn will not sell for more than one dollar per barriel in maury - well uncle
William as you ar a going to leave that Countrey I am going to request a favour of you that
is to dispose of my part of that land to the best advantage you can - if you cannot
get money for it take it in a hars beat - I want you if you can sell it to make
a right in my name if you can trust me - I am not at all afraid to trust you and will
take it as a favour - besides I will make you sattisfaction for your trouble -if you cannot
sell with out a power of etuny right and I will impower you - I rote to Jesse Hargis
to try to sell it and I never got no anser - The reason that I rote to him was that
I expected him to come to this countrey - I sopose that I have insulted brother wm
by righting to Jesse but I did not inted it for an insult - the reason was the I heard
Jesse was coming to this countrey and from his letter I have offended him in severl caces and
all the rest of my friends one insult for leaveing Frances in maury another for righting him a leter -
But I am deturmed sense I saw his letter that he shall not get mad with me for that again
if he will come and pay me my money I will be as good as ever-

Money is scarcer here than ever it was known - there is the graitest stur of religon
in this countrey that ever was heard of - I was At a camp meating in August where
there was 72 people profest to get religion - There was a camp meating in Madeson County last
week where there was 86 profest to get religion - There was also another in Giles County 48 got religion
and numbers got religion in other places - James pains Dist sun is a precher - I have
Heard him preach severl times - these things puts awful impreshens on my mind - I hope to
se you in this countrey this fall with all the rest of my young friends - I dreamed night
Befor last of convercing with cozen John Hudgins- Frances is married to a very find young man
of a veary good famely and in a good circumstanse - She expected to get married was the reason that
I left her in Maury - I wont you to fetch sister my best respects to them bothe and to brother
William and to aunt Betsey and to all other enquiring friends- Ive best to go back to
maury to live - no more at presant but remaining your loveing nephew & nease so fair
