My 3rd great grandfather was Carrol Blackard who married Sarah Hamm in Hardeman County, Tennessee. He died in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, drowning in a swollen creek in the 1860's. He was born in the 1790's in Tennessee. His wife and a son later removed to Texas. I am decended through his son, John Blackard, who died around Blytheville, Arkansas. John's son was William D. Blackard who died in his 30's in Memphis, Tenn. His son, my grandfather, Robert Lee Blackard, was born in Pemiscott County, Missouri and raised by his mother's people, the Ezells.
-Rebecca MossCarrol Blackard's (son of Levi) wife, Sarah Hamm Blackard, states on her claim of widow for Bounty land in 1893 (while living in Brown County, Texas),that Carrol died 3 Nov 1877 in Tishomingo County, MS. Carrol does not
appear on the 1880 census. I propose that this the correct death date rather than the 5 May 1881 that is sometimes used. Carrol and Sarah were married in the community of Hamburg, Hardin County, Tenn on 26 Sept 1844.Sarah also stated that she had lived in Texas in 1882. Witnesses were J.H. Johnson, Fannie Johnson, and William H. Callie.-Rebecca MossCarrol had been in, or connected to Lauderdale County, Ala from 836( enlisted there for service in the Florida-Indian War) to1850 (listed there on census).-Rebecca Moss

!Willoughby died in 1865. His brother John's wife Mary Ann died ca 1864-1868. Then John and Martha (Willoughby's wife) married on 29 Dec 1867. Then John died 20 Dec 1872.The children listed on the 1860 census with Willoughby and Martha are theirs. They are living with John and Martha on the 1870 census along with Nancy Evaline who was born 11 Mar 1863.
- Donna Blackard Woods dwoods4267@aol.comThere are records of three Blackards in Hardin County, Tennessee from 1842 to 1850. These were John, Willoughby B. and Carroll. I believe these three were brothers....All of these left Hardin County before 1860. Carroll went to Tishomingo Co. Mississippi where he died and his descendants came to Texas. John and Willoughby wen to Sevier Co. Arkansas and John wen on to Sebastian Co. Arkansas before 1870. (source: Charles M. Blackard)
Willoughby Blackard, born about 1822 TN, that was a brother to Carroll and John, sons of Levi Blackard b)1795, son of Eli .
This Willoughby and brother John went to Sevier and Sebastian Counties in Arkansas. Willoughby died in the Civil War, while John's wife also died during that time, (don't have a date or where he was buried, but think someone of this Arkansas line might) so John married Willoughby's widow, Martha, in 1867-68 in Sevier County, Arkansas. Martha, born 1833 ALA, married Willoughby in Hardin County, TN and was the daughter of John Bourland. She and Willoughby had a son James R., born 1850. These Blackards were in Franklin County TN (1812), Maury County, TN(1815), Lawrence County, TN (1816-20), Giles County, TN (1840), Hardin County, TN and Lauderdale County, ALA (1850), and in Arkansas and Tishomingo County, MS (Carroll-my line), by the 1860/70's.
This Willoughby's brother, John b) 1818 TN, married Mary Ann Casewell Counce first. Some of their children were: William Carroll, Thomas H., Mary Ann, John Riley, and Milton. Remember he later married his brother's wife after their spouses each died. - Rebecca Moss

History of Patrick & Henry Counties, Virginia by V. G. and L. G. Pedigo, first published in 1933, makes no mention of Willoughby Blackard. It does apparently refer to William "Blackwood" and Thomas Blackard as recipients of land grants (pp. 394 and 399 respectively). William shared with Pendleton Gilbert a grant to 75 acres on the headwaters of the Smith River and Ivory Creek in 1850. Thomas received a grant of 30 acres on Gilbert's Knob of Bull Mountain in 1860. - Charles HarrisPatrick County deed transfer from William Blackard on 8 Sept 1849. - Charles Harris
Tthe transcribed deed index, which lists GRANTOR William Blackard GRANTEE Jeremiah Burnett (Executor)
8 Sept 1849 Book 14/ p. 130. The term Executor suggests this had something to do with the settlement of an estate. I have a Jeremiah Burnett II who left Patrick County for Missouri in 1830 and died in 1848. His son, Jeremiah III, stayed behind. The land grant to William on the headwaters of Smith River and Ivory [Ivy] Creek would have been near present-day Vesta, about 20 miles west by road from Patrick Springs. I can't find Gilbert's Knob on either new or early-19th-century maps, but Bull Mountain starts only about 2 miles NW of Patrick Springs.. - Charles Harris

There appears to be no firm evidence that Thomas Blackard was the father of Willoughby, but it is
handed down in the family, according to Barbara C.Baughan (e-mail 27 January 2000). In addition,
Willoughby and Thomas were neighbors in Arrarat. Moreover, an Aaron Blackard was living with Willoughby in 1860, and in the 1880 census an Alelsey age 73, presumably the widow of Thomas, is with Aaron.(Charles Harris)Willoughby was conscripted into the 24th Virginia Infantry in spite of protests that his wife was pregant and the children were sick with measles. He brought the disease with him into camp in Richmond, where he, his brother William, and who knows how many others died from it. Willoughby is buried at "Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond, Co.A North Carolina Row, Grave #11, Row G Div. A." William is buried at the same cemetery, "Co. A 24th Alabama Grave #125, "J" A."
This information is from Alda Shelor Stanley, great granddaughter of Willoughby B. Blackard and America DeHart-(Charles Harris)According to Alda Shelor Stanley, Willoughby Blackard was conscripted in spite of protests that his wife was pregnant, and the children were ill with measles. He brought the disease with him and died from it, along with others including, apparently, his brother William. His widow was left destitute, and the children often went hungry.(Charles Harris)

======================================The property Willoughby B. subleased from James William Frashure
was not near Meadows of Dan where I thought it was. The 1860 census shows
that Willoughby B. was still living on the property mentioned in the lease,
which was in the southern part of the county along the Mayo River, near his
sister Sabrina Blackard Frashure, and as noted in the lease, near Levi (Lee)
Spencer and William N. West.
