Descendants of Charles Blackard I

2. Thomas Blackard [speculation]

*********************************************************************************
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
*********************************************************************************
The existance of this Thomas has not been confirmed, however; there are several clues as to his existance.

In a letter from W.G. Blackard - Manager of the Blackard Chair Company Stuart, Virginia dated June 14, 1937. W.G. Blackard stated his grandfather was William, his great grandfather was Thomas and his great-great grandfather was Willoughby. W.G. Blackard also stated -

"I have been told by my father that there were only four of the boys came over from England. These being Willoughby, Thomas, William and Aaron. Willoughby settled Stuart, Virginia and was buried near Stuart, Va. Aaron settled near Burlington, N.C. William settled at Blacksburg first and afterward moved to Washington Co. Va. and I am not sure where Thomas settled."

Charles Blackard may have had two children older than Willoughby Blackard (b.1758) if the Blackard family legends are true..

The Charles Blackard recorded in the 1800 Guilford County, NC census was 45 years old or over placing his birthdate at 1755 or earlier. Therefore, he was older than Willoughby making him one of these two children.

After the war Willoughby Blackard moved to Rowan County, NC and appear there tax lists in 1790 and 1791 and in the first US Census in the Salisbury Distict of Rowan County.

However, years earlier a 1762 Rowan County tax list records a THOMAS BLACKETT. However, it does not appear that the real English Blackett was ever in colonial North Carloina. They appear to have immigrated from England a century later in the years 1870-1930 to Canada and New England. Several of Charles Blackards neighbors in Bute County also owned land in Rowan County.

To my knowledge, the spelling BLACKETT was only recorded three times in NC records before 1890. I suspect that all three are misspellings for BLACKARD and other similar-sounding names.

For these reasons, I believe that Thomas Blackett was actually THOMAS BLACKARD and the second child of Charles Blackard and the Welsh mother in our family legends.

There is futher evidence of a yet-unknown Blackard line in NC because there a number of Blackards born in the period 1805-1820 in North Carolina that do not belong to any of the established family lines. In this genealogy I am showing these people as grandchildren of this proposed THOMAS BLACKARD.

Another piece of circumstantial evidence is that when Willoughby's son, Thomas Blackard, is married in Grayson County VA in 1822 his name is recorded as THOMAS JR. indicating that an older THOMAS BLACKARD was known to the family.

In his own lineage chart, HD "Doug" Blackard, the nephew of the Kate Blackard from whom we know of Charles Blackard records the sons of Charles Blackard I and the "Welsh Girl" as THOMAS, Willoughby, Jobe, Aaron and Charles. Doug's notes did not indicate that he was aware of Charle's son, William Blackard, from whom the Tennessee and Illinois descend.

The father of the John Blackard is unconfirmed. There is a legend of a son of Willoughby Blackard named John, however, there is nothing to link this John Blackard to Willoughby. His location near South Carolina resembles several family legends of part of the Blackard family moving to South Carolina, possibly including either a brother of son of Willoughby Blackard.

3. William Blackard

*********************************************************************************
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
*********************************************************************************

In 1935 W.G. Blackard of Blackard's Chair Company in Stuart stated - "I have been told by my father [Jesse D. Blackard of Meadows of Dan b.1850] that there were only four of the boys came over from England.

The parentage of William is not confirmed, however, Charles Blackard I, is the only adult Blackard found in VA/NC so far that could have been his father. The appearance of Charles II, William, Job and Willoughby in Caswell County suggests that they are brothers.

"In 1783, North Carolina had allowed the purchase of Tennessee lands still held by Indians. The Maury County area had been claimed in 5,000-acre tracts by wealth North Carolinans, but only in 1805 and 1806 could whites actually settle there." -The Source

Gertrude Durham,1905-1999- was raised by her grandparents -John Hershel Blackard and Hannah Catherine Imboden. She knew her Grandpa Blackard (William Laffett Blackard). She always said that the Blackards were Scottish but Grandpa's grandmother was Welsh. I think that she meant William's mother "mary ann ciulla" <mimi2537@hotmail.com>

A family story passed down through the descendents of Jobe/Job Blackard says that the name of his father was William Blackard. This is unverified and based on the possibly false assumption that the William Blackard who signed Charles Blackards marrage bond in 1783 was his father instead of his brother. Note that the Virginia family historian HD Blackard showed Job's father as Charles Blackard, who is known to be the father of Willoughby Blackard. An heirloom family Bible in Person County, North Carolina shows the descendents of Job Blackard. It also indicates that Job had two brothers. One is clearly named "Willie" and the other is now unreadible however it does not appear to resemble Willoughby in any variation of spelling. This family name "Willie" is my basis for linking William Blackard II as a brother of Job Blackard. Also the fact that William named a son Job would indicate that Job was his brother according to naming practices of the date. - Andy Blackard

We know that William was 45 or more in 1820 according to the census (i.e. before 1775). His wife, Elizabeth Humphries, is estimated as being born around 1772 to make her 18 when their first child Sarah is born in 1790.

William was born 1754 in Orange County, North Carolina, moved to Tennessee around 1807 and died in 1821 in Sumner County, Tennessee - John F. Blackard

Elizabeth Holeman of Person Co NC writes that William came back to North Carolina to die but this
is unconfirmed.

William Blackard was missing before 1789 and also 1797-1818.

It has not been proven that William Blackard's wife Eliza, was Elizabeth Humphries. However, Elizabeth Humphries married either William Blackard or Charles Blackard.

Likewise, it has not been verified whether the following William Blachard was William Blackard or William Blanchet. However, it is possible that William's wife was a Hudson as he was recorded so often near a Chamberlain Hudson who would have been the following Hudson womans cousin.

*Warren was the north half of old Bute County NC where Willoughby and Job Blackard were both born.

The spelling of BLACKARD was such a mess in Bute (became Warren & Franklin)
County records that we must use the likelike of family connections in many
cases to decide who a person actually was.

And, in my opinion, the likelihood of a Blackard-Hudson marriage is extremely
probable. In fact, I've had my eyes open for one for the last few years. This
does not prove that Eliza Blackard was an Elizabeth Hudson Blackard, but I feel that
the circumstantial evidence is sufficient to put her in the hat with Elizabeth
Humphries. Actually, my gut instinct is that Elizabeth Humphries was actually
Elizabeth (Betty) Humphries Henderson Blackard. But there is no proof of that yet.

From the records of old Edgecombe,Granville and Bute(Warren/Franklin)
Counties in North Carolina it is clear that the Blackard & Hudson
and later Blackard, Self & Hudson families were clustered together
and the Hudsons and Selfs were related by marriage. Additionally, there
was an unmistakable connection between the Blackard and Self families.

Literally, from day one when Charles Blackard I was first recorded in Edgecombe
NC in 1755 on Fishing Creek, an Isaac Hudson was nearby. Evidence suggests that both
the Blackard and Hudson families arrived in old Prince George County, Virginia
in the 17th century.

Later Charles Blackard II shows up a bit to the southwest of there on the Tar River
in Bute(Franklin) in a cluster with 2 Self families and 3 Hudson families. In fact, they
are constantly named as having adjoining property on their land deeds and witnessed
deeds for each other.

The Hudson men were WILLIAM Hudson, JOHN Hudson and ISAAC Hudson (a younger one).

The Self men were JOB Self and WILLOUGHBY Self and apparently brothers. There is
obviously a family connection with the Blackards as there was also a JOB BLACKARD
and a WILLOUGHBY BLACKARD who appear to have been brothers.

Furthermore, Job Blackard named a daughter Francis Snow Blackard after FRANCES SELF SNOW.

Charles Blackard II posted the marriage bond for Francis Self and Spencer Snow.

After the war Willoughby Blackard was living next door to Spencer and Francis Snow as per
the 1783 Warren (Bute) NC tax list.

Therefore, Job Blackard, Willoughby Blackard and Charles Blackard II all knew the Self family
well, especially Francis Self Snow. So perhaps she was as cousin too and there was a Blackard-Self
marriage as well that we don't know about yet.

**************************************************************

Additionally, Willoughby Self was married to ANNE HUDSON, daughter of the Isaac Hudson
who appeared in NC close to Charles Blackard I.

Nancy and Issac had other brothers named Henry, Chamberlain and Abraham. In future years
another, younger CHAMBERLAIN HUDSON shows up near our WILLIAM BLACKARD in both the 1790 and 1791 Orange County NC tax lists. Then they both show up in Sumner County TN and then the
next generation of the William Blackard line and a younger Chamberlain Hudson show up
in Illinois in the 1830s.

So if the above WILLIAM BLANCHARD was actually our WILLIAM BLACKARD then his wife was
more-than-likely Chamberlains Hudson's first cousin. That could explain their lines
sticking close together as they migrated west to Tennessee and north to Illinois.

There doesn't appear to be as much information available on the particular Hudson family mentioned
in the above court decision and so it may take some time to determine if it was an
Elizabeth who is being referred to. But I think we should give it consideration because
it fits the bill in several ways and a Blackard-Hudson marriage seems very likely.

The records of Lick Creek Church begin "The United Baptist Church of Christ on Lick Creek of Little Wabash." Lick Creek Church was organized on Saturday (before the 4th Sunday), December 23, 1820. The charter members were dismissed from Bankston Fork Church. The names are not clearly given, but from the first list of members we find the following names who were either charter members, or at least very early members: William Walker, Moses Pearce, Charles Lee, Ben Gholson, John Gholson, Samuel Spillman, Abel Rice, Isaac Naught, Allen Moore, James Pearce, Sally Walker, Polly Lee, Sally McGee, Polly Gholson, Nancy Spillman, Betsy Emerson, Lydia Rice, Nancy Naught, Patsy Moore, Polly Naught, Sally Pearce, Elizabeth Wilson, and Betsy Pearce. The presbytery was composed of Elders Wilson Henderson, Stephen Stilley and John Wren.

At first the services were held in a log cabin; prior to April 1825 the church had circulated a subscription to erect a log meeting house, twenty by twenty-four feet. A deed for two acres of land where the meeting house stands was requested in July 1827. The present meeting house was constructed prior to 1900.

In July 1824 the church approved of receiving members at Rector's Fork, and an arm was established there, which became constituted as a church in June 1825. An arm was extended to the Pons settlement in October 1825, and members were dismissed to form a church there, in February 1827. In July 1833, the church extended an arm to the schoolhouse on the North Fork, in Gallatin County, near Crenshaw's mill. In July 1834, Bro. Harget, Sister Harget, Sister Ambers, and others were dismissed for a constitution there.

4. Charles Blackard II

*********************************************************************************
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
*********************************************************************************
The parentage of Charles II is not confirmed, however, Charles Blackard I, is the only adult Blackard found in NC so far that could have been his father. The sequential appearance of Charles II, William, Job and Willoughby in Caswell County suggests that they are brothers.

Charles Blackard may have had two children older than Willoughby Blackard (b.1758).

Charles Blackard appears to be living adjacent to Job and Willoughby Self in Bute/Franklin County NC around 1778. Perhaps his father Charles Blackard I married a Self because his son Charles II posted a marriage bond for Frances Self in Bute County, NC in 1778 who married Spencer Snow. Charles repeatedly appears in Bute Co tax lists and deeds adjacent to Job Self, Willoughby Self and William Self.

Charles Blackard posted the marriage bond for Frances Self to Spencer Snow in 1778 who was the right age to have been a daughter of Willougby Self and granddaughter of Job Self. There seems to be no reason for him to have done that unless Frances was related somehow by marriage.

Job Blackard named a daughter FRANCES SNOW Blackard, evidently after the same person that Charles posted the marriage bond for, FRANCES SELF SNOW.

The Charles Blackard recorded in the 1800 Guilford County, NC census was 45 years old or over placing his birthdate at 1755 or earlier. Therefore, he was older than Willoughby making him one of these two children.

Charles II moved to Dickson County, Tn around 1805. "In 1783, North Carolina had allowed the purchase of Tennessee lands still held by Indians. The Maury County area had been claimed in 5,000-acre tracts by wealth North Carolinans, but only in 1805 and 1806 could whites actually settle there." -The Source

Goodspeed recorded Levi Blackard as being one of the first settlers of Lawrence County. I think there's a chance that could be his probable father Charles Blackard II recorded in Lauderdale County in 1826-27. He was previously
recorded in Wayne Co, KY in 1814-1815 owning land after bouncing around from Richardson TN and Barren KY. Perhaps this is where he went. Charles II would be about 70-75 in 1819-1827, though
I don't see anything else on BLACK around there yet. -andy

================================================
LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TN - MISCELLANEOUS - Goodspeed's Lauderdale County

After the treaty with the Chickasaw Indians, and the lands of West Tennessee had been opened for settlement, Henry Rutherford, his brother John, brother- in-law Oliver Crenshaw, George Davis and Willis Chambers, came to Lauderdale County from Middle Tennessee, making the trip in keel-boats, and arrived withtheir slaves and household goods at Key Corner September 1, 1819. Their families followed later in the fall. The Rutherfords and Crenshaw burnedaway the trees and cane, erected log cabins, and completed preparations for a permanent home, while Davis and Chambers settled only temporarily, and two years later moved to what afterward became Dyer County, and settled about four and one-half miles east of where the town of Dyersburg now stands. "

"Benjamin Porter and family, natives of Virginia, moved from Middle Tennessee in the fall of the same year, coming by land, crossing the Tennessee River at Reynoldsburg, and reached Key Corner February 1, 1820. The following April Mr. Porter cleared a tract of land in the Key Corner neighborhood, one and a half miles west from the present village of Double Bridges, fifteen miles northeast from Ripley, and in this house, still standing, was born June 12, 1820, Benjamin Porter, Jr., the first white child born in Lauderdale County. Mr. Porter is still living at the old homestead. Probably the next settlement in the county was made in the neighborhood of Fulton by Samuel Givens and others in 1825-26, and the next one in the Durhamville neighborhood in 1826-27, by the Durhams, Turners, Neiswongers, Rices, Chambers and Taylors, and at about the same time Robert C. Campbell settled near Ashport on the Mississippi; Jacob Boyler, settled near Ripley; John Flippin, eleven miles
north of Ripley; Hugh Dunlap, near Double Bridges; James Sherman, on Hatchie River, and Stephen Blackwell, near Hurricane Hill. Other early settlers were Joseph Wardlaw,..., Zachariah Paine, ..."

Among those who received grants for land in the county were the following, together with the number of acres each received: Henry Rutherford, 500 acres; Griffith L. Rutherford, 3,000; Adam Boyd, 1,000; J. M. Alexander, 675; Jacob Byler, 100; Thomas Bond, 144; Green Baker, 200; John w. Campbell, 1,428; CHARLES BLACK, 100

5. Willoughby Blackard

*********************************************************************************
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
*********************************************************************************
There is a possibility that Willoughby was named after the Willoughby family. A Francis Blackard must have been friends with a John Willoughby in Barbados. Francis Blackard witnessd his daughters baptisim in 1723 in St. Michaels Parish, Barbados where many of the early colonists of NC and VA came from. -andy

Willoughby Blackard came to Burks Fork Creek in what is now Carroll County, but was then Grayson in 1810. On Oct 16, 1810 he bought 300 acres of land from Thomas Jessop and on Oct 20, 1810 he bought 34 acres from John Pearson. The deeds are found respectively in Deed Book 3 at page 143 and Deed Book 3, page 6 in Grayson, He sold the land on March 5, 1814 to John Dalton and Reuben Cock (Deed Book 3, page 302). His wife Susannah signed the deed when he sold.

He paid personal property taxes in Grayson from 1812 to 1815 which must be the approximate period of his residence here. He is not found in the 1820 Grayson census.

There are two marriages which may be his family:

In Grayson County, on Aug 20,1822 a Thomas Blackard married Eleanor Sutphin, daughter of Hendrick Sutphin. They moved away from here; to where, I do not know.

In Patrick County, (date of bond) Oct 6, 1816, William Sutphin Jr married Lucy Blackard, They lived here many years on a farm not far from where old Willoughby had made his home.
-John Alderman

The Stuart Historical Museum has a hand-written note, unsigned, that says that Willoughby was a veteran of the Revolution who lived for a few years on Burks Ford. According to his pension application, he was born 8-12-1757 and enlisted in the 4th Regiment of the NC Line in 1776, dischard 1781, Pension application, recorded in Wythe Co. Orders 1829-1833, pg 410. Goes on to state he lived for many yars in Patrick Co apparently having settled there from his home County of Bute NC. in 1810 he bought most of theold Jessop place, Grasyon DB 3-6-3-143. Sold out and moved away later, last years spent in Wythe CO. He apparently had a son named William. Willoughby married a Susn Owens from KY. Our line comes through Ghomas Blackard born 1798, children Susan, William, Willoughby, Aaron (our grandfather), Tobias, Nancy, Sabrina and Lucinda. I have found that Aaron Blackard born 5-31-1833 married Mary Jane Shelton, had the following: Thomas J. , Sarah H., Charles T., James, Peter R., Robert and Alice. - Dottie Blackard Via

"In a book at the Museum in Stuart, on page 35, it states "WILLOUGHY BLACKARD' Willoughby was an old veteran of the Revolution who lived for a few years on Burks Fork. According to his pension application, he was born August 12, 1757 and enlisted in the 4th Regiment of the North carolina Line in 1776. He saw action in the army under General Washington at Germantown and later was in the army in the southern theater of the war, being captured at Charleston, SC. Still later h was with the 6th North Carolina in most of the significant battles on the southern front: Guilford Courthouse, Camden, and Eutaw Springs. He was discharged in 1781. (Pension application, recorded in Wythe Orders, 1829-1833, pg.. 410) He lived for many years in Patrick County, apparently having settled there from his home county of Bute(?) NC. In 1810 he bought most of the old Jessop place, together with a tract from Pearson, and settled on Burks Ford (Grayson, DB 3-6:3-143). In 1814 he sold out and moved away. His last years were spent in Wythe County." - Dottie Blackard Via

MARRIAGE

He was listed as a single man in the 1783 Warren County NC tax list. He was listed with 2 daughters in the 1790 Rowan County NC . So Willoughby probably married in the 1784-1788 period.

This final pension payment indicates that Willoughby died between March 1838 and May 1838.

FAMILY LEGENDS
******************************************************************************
In 1979, HD "Doug" Blackard writes that his aunt Kate remembered that Willloughby was the son of Charlie Blackard and a Welsh woman."

Charlie Blackard was said to be a Scot Highland lad, came down into Wales and met and fell in love with a Welch girl. They were married and had two children, then decided to come to America - I know nothing further until Willoughby Blackard, said to be their son, at the age of sixteen joined the Virginia Militia according to the information I found in the Archives at Richmond Va. More may be found about his services, today you might write there and ask about the service of one Willoughby Blackard II - a revolutionary soldier.

I read an article sometime back to Willoughby was a Welch surname in common use in Wales - so I have read (not confirmed) another family story is that he was given a homestead in the highlands of Va. for his services. My father told me that it was 60 acres and was in Carroll county out or near Floyd County. Willoughby Blackard married a Susan Owen of Kentucky said to be a planter's daughter and aristocrat. He came out of the army as a pricefighter met her on one of his trips and married her and brought her to the highlands of Virginia (I laughingly say starved her to death) one more family story and I will have to stop and lay down (excuse me please) it was said that he among others was taken prisoner by the English that they were made to kneel and bow their heads to be shot then an officer went down the line and looked down at them when he looked around grandfather Willoughby he saw 2 crowns, double crowns and ask him who he was and grandfather answered him in Scottish that he was of Scotish ancestry and said who he was and the officer was to have ordered him released.
source: Letter from Kate Blackard to HD Blackard

"Great Great Grandfather, Willoughby Blackard II married to Susan Owens from Kentucky, THREE SONS.

Our great, great grandmother was Susan Owen Blackard, she was a Kentucky Planters daughter and from a wealthy family so the story goes.

Great, great grandfather was a prisoner and blind-folded to be killed along with others by English soldiers. When the ask him where he was from, he told them he was from Scotland. They ordered that he be turned loose and free.

[Great, great grandfather] settled in Virginia. Fought in the Revolutionary war. Joined when he was 16, granted land in Carroll County [Va]. This is on file in Richmond. Some records are in Washington." -source: Lessie & dau Iris Blackard

In a book at the Museum in Stuart, on page 35, it states "WILLOUGHY BLACKARD' Willoughby was an old veteran of the Revolution who lived for a few years on Burks Fork. His last years were spent in Wythe County." - Dottie Blackard

John Perry Alderman states,
"He lived for many years in Patrick County, apparently having settled there from his home county of Bute (?) NC. In 1810 he bought most of the old Jessop place, together with a tract from Pearson, and settled on Burk's Fork."

CHILDREN OF WILLOUGHBY
******************************************************************************
Regarding the children of Willoughby II, Doug Blackard writes "There is no existing record of their children except by word of mouth"

Lessie Blackard states that Thomas was one three sons. Lessie also has Willoughby indicated as as Willoughby II. Perhaps this is in reference to an uncle named Willoughby also.

The 1820 Wythe Co, VA census, however, indicates that Thomas had 4 living brothers at that time, including William who had already married and left home.

Susannah Owen

"Great Great Grandfather, Willoughby Blackard II married to Susan Owens from Kentucky, THREE SONS.
Our great, great grandmother was Susan Owen Blackard, she was a Kentucky Planters daughter and from a wealthy family so the story goes." -Lessie Blackard

Thought by some to be a daughter of Henrick and Rachael Owens.[3]

However, I believe Susannah to be from the Granville County, NC Owen family who came from Surry County, Virginia. Two Owen men from this family are on the same page of the 1782 payroll roster as Willoughby Blackard and records show that Susannah was a name used often in their family. Since Willoughby's brother Charles II also married in Granville County in 1783, there is reason to believe that the brothers spent time there. Additionally, the Owen men on the 1782 NC payroll received land grants in Kentucky.

7. Job Blackard

*********************************************************************************
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
*********************************************************************************
Jobe Blackard -- English. b. Dec. 16, 1766. Married Jan 13 1792 or Jan 31 1792 Jean Hargis, daughter of Shadrack and Nancy Lea or Lee Brooks Hargis. Shadrack b. Jan 4, 1740. d. Jan 25 1816. Nancy b. April 12 1745. d. Feb 1816 (Funeral preached by Rev. James Claton. Text 1st Chro. 1-9) - Lizzie Holeman

The parentage of Job is not confirmed, however, Charles Blackard I, is the only adult Blackard found in NC so far that could have been his father. The appearance of Charles II, William, Job and Willoughby in Caswell County suggests that they are brothers.

"F D Ronald Park did extensive Blackard genealogy searching in Person Co., NC and made a handsketched tree. In that tree, the "Patriarch" is at the top of the tree like this: "Wm. Willoughby Blackard b. abt 1730 in England", going down to two sons (and two sons only), Willyoughby, Jr, and Jobe in Person Co., NC. From there, Jobe's family is followed in that particular handsketched tree down to the Moore family in Person Co., NC and the Blackard family in Johnson Co., AR."

However, from our research in North Carolina, no such person named Wm. WIlloughby Blackard has ever been recorded elsewhere. It appears that this name was speculation.

The Virginia Blackard family historian, HD Blackard, who is the nephew of Kate Blackard shows Job's father as Charles Blackard, who is known to be the father of Willoughby Blackard. The fact that Job named a daughter Frances Snow after a woman that Charles Blackard posted a marriage bond for in 1778 is more evidence that Charles Blackard was actually the father of Job Blackard. Furthermore, Charles Blackard is associated frequently with a Job Self in Bute and Franklin County. The name Job was a family name in the Self family and there were actually 20 men named Job in the Self family in NC and VA before 1800. A Willoughby Self is recorded with Job Self and Charles Blackard in many land deeds. Willoughby was also a common name in the Self family and there were 2-3 Willoughby Selfs in Bute/Franklin and Orange County. A William Self also lived near Charles.

An heirloom family Bible in Person County, North Carolina shows the descendents of Job Blackard. It also indicates that Job had two brothers. One is clearly named "Willie" and the other is now unreadible..
