The Blackard "First Family" - Willoughby Blackard (est 1758 - 1838)Willoughby Blackard is the only son of Charles Blackard I for which there is direct evidence. His great granddaughter, Kate Blackard, wrote that there was a family Bible in the home of Willoughby's son, Thomas Blackard, whose text was written in Welsh and in which was recorded the "Blackard line." Kate named Charles as the father of Willoughby. According to Willoughby's service records he was born in Bute County, North Carolina on August 12, 1758. Actually, Bute had not yet been formed from old Granville County at that time, so Willoughby's birthplace would have been in Granville County at the time of his birth. Charles Blackard was recorded in the 1757 tax list of Granville County consistant with this fact. Later Bute County became Warren and Franklin Counties and after Willoughby's service in the revolutionary war he was recorded in the 1783 Warren County, NC tax list as Williby Black. Sometime between 1800 and 1810 Willoughby left NC for Virginia where most of his descendents live today. Willoughby died in 1838 in the hills of Wythe County, Virginia according to his war pension records. His son William had power of attorney for him.
