It had been nearly 100 years since Christopher Robertson, his posited great-great-grandfather had patented 600 acres in present-day Chesterfield County with John Sturdivant. Roberson was still in the county in 1748.

Eva & Everyone,

I have a litte theory. (Doesn't everyone?)

I have shared this with some of you, but never submitted it to the list
before for fear of sounding like a ditz if no one agreed with me. So here it
is anyway.

The line of descendancy should be as follows:
Robert West (b. England ~1612, d. ~ Nov. 1646 Accomack/Northampton, VA)
- George West (b. ~1639, d. 1702)
- Thomas West (b. 1660-1667, d. Bet. March 1707/08 - June 1708)
- George West (b. Bet. 1686 - 1692, d. Bet. 1755 - 1760)
- Levi West (b. 13 March 1725/26, d. 17 June 1787)

Suspend belief for a few minutes in what you "know" or think you know about
this West family line. I will start with Robert & produce a chain of evidence
(my sources) to back up my theory. Your opinions on this are appreciated.

At 7-8 years of age, Robert West was one of 100 children sent by the
Virginia Company of London to America to become apprentices to the colonial
farmers. In return at the end of their service, they would receive land,
cattle and corn. Robert was a servant of the Lady Elizabeth Dale who was the
wife of the Governor of Virginia Sir Thomas Dale. Dale left VA and died,
leaving his widow to run her cattle business & plantation near Charles City
from her home in England. She never set foot in VA.
In 1622, when an Indian Massacre wiped out a significant part of the
population in the Upper James River area, there were survivors from Lady
Dale's plantation, including 8 boys. I believe Robert was one of them.

[Notes re: Lady Elizabeth Dale]
p.8 "After the Indian Massacre on March 22, 1622, the people in the most
dangerous parts of the Upper James River area were evacuated and resettled.
Among these were Lady Elizabeth Dale's tennents consisting of men and boys in
Charles City borough. Along with her cattle, they were relocated near Old
Plantation Creek. Although they had been in Virginia since 1619 no land was
patented by her."
Robert West grew to manhood as an apprentice/servant on the plantation of
the Lady Elizabeth Dale, now located in Accomack/Northampton County, VA.

Elizabeth West died, for Robert was remarried to the widow Mary Rayne in
1643. Mary was not a faithful wife (poor Robert!) and was caught abed with
Richard Jones. Robert's "son GEORGE" was present when 2 witness heard him
say, "come off my Mother, Lechett Ile tell my father."

Refers to GEORGE WEST the orphan of Robert West

At the time of his father's death, GEORGE WEST is ~ 7 years old. I have not
yet found documentation supporting the guardianship or disposition of the boy
during his youth, which is the one thing on this line that needs additional
proof. Anyone have access to a copy of the will?

GEORGE WEST's presence as an adult in Accomack/Northampton County, VA is
very well documented starting in 1666 in various court documents, including
the following:

Riley McKey, Heritage Books, Inc., 1998.
p.66 Date: 26 March 1684 "GEORGE WEST told the court that GILES MONPERSON (
who had married WEST's daughter) had deserted the county with his wife,
leaving a young child in the custody of Dennis Morris "to his and his wife's
great grief." They did not know when Monperson or his wife would return to
take the child, so WEST requested an order that he should have the child and
any estate that might be found. WEST promised to pay any just debts and save
the parish the expense of supporting the child. The court considered WEST's
petition to be reasonable and it was so ordered with WEST paying court
charges. (p.38)"

George West moved from Accomack County to the border-disputed area of Indian
River Hundred on the Delaware/Maryland border in Sussex County. Before the
move, (Bet. 1688 - 1702) George had married Susannah, the widow of Peter
DuParkes.

children of his own <18.
Probably about the same time George & Susannah moved to Sussex County,
son THOMAS WEST moved just across the county line to MD. He purchased 500
acres in 1696, naming it WESTS RECOVERY. Located in Baltimore Hundred, the
tract was also located along Indian River.

"JOHN WEST was a great admirer of Andrew Jackson. He walked from Rock
Bridge to Logan County, KY to see the Jackson-Dickson duel, which was on 28
May 1806. In a pension application JOHN says that he moved to Sumner County
in 1807."
John probably moved his family to Sumner at that time. It is unknown
whether Rachel was alive at that time and came to Sumner or if she died in NC.
Another story told by Brode Cantrell to report's author: JOHN was out in
the woods hunting when he heard a man splitting rails. Upon investigating, he
discovered that the man was his brother ANDREW WEST. Until that moment, JOHN
did not know that his brother had moved into the area. JOHN had come to the
headwaters of Desha's Creek, near the present village of Rock Bridge. His
brother ANDREW had come up Brushy Fork Creek to the headwaters, also Rock
Bridge. They lived only 15 miles apart. Both JOHN & ANDREW remained in Sumner
County and have many descendants there. Two other brothers, JACOB & GEORGE,
lived in Sumner County for a short time. GEORGE moved on to Rutherford
County, TN. Jacob moved to IL where he had a lawsuit tried by Abraham Lincoln
in 1837.
"JOHN fought at New Orleans under Jackson who affectionately called him
"RED COAT JOHNNY" because he killed so many British at New Orleans. He also
went with Jackson to fight the Creek Indians at Horseshoe Bend. On this
expedition, JOHN's ankle was bitten by a poisonous snake. The place never
healed completely, becoming swollen and painful again each summer."

So . . . what's your opinion on my little theory? Please feel free to poke a
few holes in it if necessary. That's what theories are for.

Here is the information that I have collected on Robert West over the past few
weeks. As you will see, there is documented evidence that he had a son named
George West. Also, that he lived in Northampton County, VA. Other evidence
shows that Robert West was a servant/tenant to the Lady Elizabeth Dale, wife
of the former Governor Sir Thomas Dale. Lady Elizabeth never set foot in
Virginia, but her land holdings were documented and she owned a cattle
operation.
Although there is documentation on many of the early transportations from Eng
to VA, there is no record of the transportation of a Robert West before 1639.
Yet there is documentation in the Northampton Records that Robert West was
there as early as 1635/36. Other information shows that the tenants of Lady
Dale were in VA as early as 1619 in the Charles City area and were evacuated
after the Indian Massacre of 1622, being relocated to the Lady Dale's land on
Old Plantation Creek.
According to my estimates, Robert was born ~1612. He might have been
transported as a very young child with his family or he might have been born
in VA.
Here are my notes on Robert:

Source: County Court Records of Accomack-Northampton, Virginia 1640-1645,
Edited by Susie M. Ames (SLC FHL)
[[Notes: Until now, there was no evidence to suggest that George West was not
the individual transported to Northumberland County, VA in 1653. There seemed
to be no other records indicating the presence of a George West in the
Accomack or Northampton region before that date.]]
This source lists a Robert West who married Mary the relict of Rowland Rayne.
Mary and Rowland had a daughter named Mary Rowland. Robert West had sold a
parcel of land in the right of his wife and was giving his step-child one
"sufficient heifer with calfe or a cow calfe by her side att or before Aprill
next with all her increase both Male and Female forever." (Forgot to write
down the date, but located prior to the 1643 entries below.)
Another entry casts some shadowy light on the character of Mary West as a
deposition is given by a neighbor Anne Moye who reports that Martin Kennett
told her he had "seen Richard Jones and Mary West abed together."
(1643) The deposition of John Tully. States that he & Susanna Kennett
witnessed Richard Jones and Mary West in bed together. Mary's son GEORGE WEST
was present in the room yelling at the man to "come off my Mother, Lechett Ile
tell my father."
(1643) The deposition of Susanna Kennett. Follows the same situation above
described. Mary West had given her son instructions to fetch water so that she
could "wash the said Richard Jones" (this after their activity in the bed).
"Wheras it appeareth unto this Court by the Affidavitts of John Tully and
Susanna Kennett that Richard Jones Committed Adultery with Mary the wife of
Robert West, and the said Richard absenting himself, It is therefore Ordered
by this Court that the punishment that shall be inflicted upon the said
Richard and Mary for their said Offence shall be suspended until the next
County Court and that the said Richard shall not Accompany with the said Mary,
and it is therefore further Ordered that the said Richard shall put in
sufficient security for his appearance at the County Court houlden att
Northampton, Then and there to answer unto such matters of misdemeanors as
shalbe objected against him in and about the premises."
There is no indication in any of the depositions as to the reaction of Mary's
husband Robert West.

A later entry indicates that Robert West is the "sole heyre and executor of
Robert Lawson deceased." The court ordered that he pay unto Georg Smyth the
quantity of 360 pounds of tobacco due for funeral charges out of Lawson's
estate.
[[[Notes: Whether or not this rather dramatic trial of adultery actually
relates to this family line, it does prove that there was a GEORGE WEST in the
Accomack- Northampton area in the 1640s. The current approximate birth range
for our George West is listed as "1610-1640", a rather wide range. However,
considering that his children were born between 1660-1702 ,he was probably
born closer to the 1630-1640 end of the range.]]]

West, here is an interpretation of some of the data.
* Robert West was born ca1612 (location unknown)
* Rowland Rayne died ca 1640 in Accomack County, VA
* Rowland Rayne's widow, Mary Rayne married Robert West
ca1640-1643. Robert West would have been 28-31 years of age.
* Rowland & Mary had 1 daughter by the name of Mary.
* Robert West had a son by the name of George West. Unknown if Mary
is also his mother. He was born prior to 1643 and in that year was "a boy"
who was old enough to fetch water and form sentences.
Chances are that he was born prior to to R&M's 1640ish marriage and is
not Mary's son, although he was young enough to consider her his "Mother".
* In 1643, George West was probably <10 years of age.

prior to their marriage suggests that they produced a child less than 9 months
after the wedding. This might be the boy George West who most likely would
have been born 1633-1640. If he was born sometime during 1639, he would have
been about 4 years old when Mary Rayne West was caught with Richard Jones.]]

Although they had been in Virginia since 1619 no land was
patented by her."

p.9 "Henry Watkins, overseer for Lady Dale. Feb 1624."
p.21 "Sept 1632, Charles Harmar, overseer for lady Dale's land had patented
100 acres at the mouth of Old Plantation Creek in 1628."

p.39 "The demand for breeding cattle and some idea of the extent to which the
industry had developed is indicated in an order which Lady Elizabeth Dale sent
her overseer in 1636."

p.40 "Although the Lady Dale never came to Virginia, she conducted a
profitable business in Accomack County where her tenants were placed after
being evacuated from the borough of Charles City in 1622. Her land was not
surveyed and recorded, but its bounds were generally recognized by her
neighbors and the court."
[Notes re: the above entries: This information suggests that Robert West may
have been one of the tenants who was evacuated from Charles City. He later
gives testimony in a case involving the mention of the Lady Dale's cattle
which would also suggest that he was involved in her cattle business in some
unknown capacity. Based upon his approximated age as given in the deposition,
Robert would have been about 10 years old in 1622 when the tenants were
evacuated.]

[Notes: In an effort to establish that Robert West might have been born in
Virginia or come over as a very young child, these lists will include the
names and dates of transport for WESTs entering the colony prior to 1625.
There are no entries for any ROBERT WEST prior to 1639 when it has already
been established that Robert was in Accomack no later than 1635/6.

[NOTES: Based upon the above dates, if the assumtion was made that Robert West
was born in Virginia in 1612, the only candidate from the above lists to be
his father would be: Francis, 1608 [7860 p.821]. Also note that Mrs. West was
not transported at the same time as her husband. It is also doubtful that
Francis West, who was apparently some relation to the De La Warre Wests, would
have a son who ends up as a servant, even to the likes of Lady Dale. Francis
was also a one-time governor of VA.
There is some mention in the entries above that Lady Dale's tenants arrived
around 1619. If Robert was among them, it would have been as a 7 year old
child. It is possible that he was transported without family present as was
the case with ANTHONY WEST who was also transported to VA as when he was ~17.
If, however ROBERT WEST was transported from England with his father, which
might account for his lack of being named in the transportation lists, the
most likely candidates based upon a 1618-1619 arrival time are: Frances,
1618-1619 [3315, p.10]; Frances, 1619 [1219.4, p.13]; and John, 1618 [1262,
p.321].
1623 and 1624 seem to be the other main choices for WEST arrivals with names
being: Anthony, Francis, John, Nathaniell and Thomas.]

[Notes:Chances are that the servants of Sir Thomas and Lady Dale and the
cattle which they breeded as part of their cattle operation arrived together
in one of the 3 ships which Sir Thomas Dale brought with him from England on
his voyage to Virginia in 1611. Sir Thomas left Virginia in 1616, returning to
England and bringing with him the Indian Princess Pocahontas. He never
returned to VA. The Lady Dale ran the Virginia business from England when her
husband left for Indonesia.
Robert is listed as servant to the Lady Dale in 1635/6. The Lady Dale died in
Eng in 1639. There are only a few entries for Robert West between 1635 and
Robert's death in 1646, but he appears to be a small land owner with some
cattle of his own. Robert West would have been about 34 at the time of his
death. His son George West was then an orphan at about 7 years of age.]
