This 1776 Bute County NC deed indicates that the land where Charles Blackard lived on Turkey Creek and Macon Branch was sold. In 1777 a new law reorganized the land entry system as the state took over granting the vacant land in NC.

Charles Blackard and Samuel Morris are both listed on the 1777 Bute NC Tax List for Thomas Turners Distict. Some of the family names like Aycock, Green , Person, Davis and Capps were found close to Charles Blackard I earlier in 1757-1768. Perhaps the older generation were retired from tax listing and we see the sons listed in 1777.

Charles Blackard was found on a different tax list in Bute in 1778 and none of the names from the deed are mentioned. Charles clearly had to move as a result of the sale of this land and must have relocated to where he was recorded on a 1778 Bute deed.
Richard Aycock and Samuel Morris were both on the 1777 tax list with Charles Blackard.

Gideon Macon had been an early resident of Granville County and Joseph Green, John Green, William Cooper, and Joseph Person were listed in his district. These 4 men were also on the same 1757 Granville tax list as Charles Blackard.
Peter Smart who appears to have lived near Charles Blackard in the Baptist
Meeting House area bought land in 1781 adjoining Macon on Melton Creek.

This Bute NC deed interested me for several reasons:
1) it names James Alston of Orange as a son of James Alston
2) it names Melton's Creek and Macons Branch both where the Blackards recorded
3) the Alston land is adj. Samuel Williams, son of the Samuel Williams with
whom
Charles Blackard was first recorded in NC with in 1755.
I wonder if it is no coincidence that the names Sam Williams, Charles
Blackard, and Jos. John Alston are in both places together - together in
1755/6 on Fishing Creek in Edgecombe and their sons close together in 1773/6
across the Granville/Bute line where Melton's Creek empties into Fishing Creek.
I cannot find Macons Branch on any map but it appears that it was within
walking distance of Meltons Creek.
Charles Blackard I appears to have lived near the Baptist Meeting House
around the headwaters of Melton's and Gunthers Creeks in 1757, 1766 and 1768.
I believe that it was Charles Blackard II who was recorded on Macons Branch
adj. Williams in 1776.
So James Alston was a large landowner near Charles Blackard. Perhaps the
Blackards worked for them raising tobacco. I have seen 2 different Glasgow,
Scotland tobacco merchants named in deeds in that area so I don't think
there is any doubt that they were all raising tobacco there.
