Locating Charles Blackard I & II in Granville/Bute County,
North Carolina in 1757-1768.

This study focuses very narrowly on where Charles Blackard I appeared to have been living in 1757 after being recorded in Edgecombe County up until perhaps the last living record of him in 1768. It then appears that his son, Charles Blackard II, was in the same area up until 1777. The evidence suggests that the family lived in one location during these years, though the political definitions of the county and districts changed repeatedly. Therefore, this was where Willoughby Blackard was born in 1758 and Job Blackard was born in 1766. It was Granville County when Willoughby was born, Bute when he enlisted in the war, and Warren County by the time he was discharged. It was Bute at the time of Job’s birth.

The junction of the Gunthers’s Creek and Melton’s Creek headwaters is at 36 degrees 18 minutes latitude and in the range of 77 degrees 55 min to 78 degrees longitude. The Samuel Williams grant in nearby Edgecombe was almost the same latitude and 77 degrees 50 minutes longitude.

However, it appears that Charles Blackard was in a slightly different location in 1760 and 1762.

Charles Blackard I was recorded in Edgecombe County in 1755. In 1757 he settled just across the Granville-Edgecombe line on the same body of water, Fishing Creek in the neck of land between it on the south and Reedy or Reedy Pond Creek on the north side.
These were 4 watersheds and their corresponding tax districts in Granville County NC at that time on the Edgecombe (Halifax) line. This area became Bute County in 1764 until 1779.

Great Fishing/Fishing Creek - 1762 Fishing Creek Tax District
Shocco Creek - 1762 Shocco Creek Tax District

During the period of 1757-1768 the range where Charles Blackard I was recorded would be described in land deeds with these general descriptions:

South side (SS) of Conway or Little Fishing Creek
On or on both sides (BS) of Reedy Creek
Northside (NS) of Fishing Creek

Other smaller bodies of water that are mentioned frequently include:

Melton’s Creek [4 on map below]
Gunther’s Creek [3 on map below]
Reedy Branch [1 on map below]
Rocky Branch [3 on map below]
Spring by the Baptist Meeting House
Spring Branch

[2] on map below is “Clun seat” the Alston Plantation

Map 3 - Melton’s Creek, Gunther’s Creek and Clun Seat area of Bute

Charles was recorded on the 1757 Granville tax list for what was possibly the D. Harris tax district. Later in 1766 he was recorded on the 1766 Bute tax list for the Baptist district near Fishing Creek. He appears to have been recorded on a 1762 Granville list as well but I have not yet researched that entire list.

Bute county was formed from Granville in 1764 and it appears that Charles Blackard stayed in the same place from 1757 to 1766 only the county name changed and the tax districts were redivided.

If we visualize the 1757 Harris district and the 1766 Baptist district as two overlapping circles, then the people who lived in the overlap zone would have lived in an even smaller region.

This considerably smaller list of 22 men (spelling corrected) were in both 1757 and 1766 lists, suggesting that they lived relatively close to each other, perhaps within 7 miles by my estimate:

BLACK/BLACKER/BLACKARD BUTE DEEDS

There is only one deed in Bute County in 1764-1768 that clearly refers to Charles Blackard.

There was a William Black of Virginia who operated a mill some distanct up Fishing Creek on Possumquarter Creek that fed into Fishing Creek. He has not been identified by Black family researchers. Even though Charles Blackard was sometimes recorded as Charles Black, I don’t think there is a strong possibility that this Possumquarter William Black was a Blackard.

On the other hand there was a different man recorded back in the 1740’s in Edgecombe as William Black who correlates well with the Blackard neighborhood and could be a Blackard.

CHARLES BLACKARD

Here are two transcriptions of the 1768 Bute County William Arnold deed witnessed by Charles Blacker or Blackard on Reedy Creek. This gives the information that Eustice Daniel once owned the property and that it adjoins the property of Green and Mangum, who are referenced in those terms in many Bute deeds in this community so they must have been well-known men in the community. The area is given as south of Reedy Creek, which is also implicitly north of Fishing Creek.

This is the only Bute County deed witnessed by Charles Blackard. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that he lived very nearby and was probably a neighbor.

Comparing this deed to the tax lists above, we see that William Cooper, William Mangum and four Greens were in the same tax district as Charles Blackard in the 1766 Bute tax list. Furthermore, Joseph Green was in both the 1757 Granville and 1766 Bute tax districts with Charles Blackard. Eustis Daniel was in the 1757 Granviille tax list in the same district with Charles Blackard prior to selling his land to Davis in 1766.

In order of co-occurrences, these 4 men appear with Charles Blackard in 2 or 3 out of 3 records (1757, 1766, 1768):

Joseph Green
William Cooper
William Mangum
Eustis Daniel (before 1766)

The first landmark that we have in addition to Charles Blackard being in the 1766 Baptist tax district centered on Reedy (Pond) Creek is “SS Reedy Crk.” So our first landmarks are:

Granville County (1757-1764)
Bute County (1764-1777)
Warren County (present)
Capt. Harris Tax District of Granville before 1764
Baptist Tax District of Bute in 1766
South side of Reedy (Pond) Creek

Eight years earlier in 1760 a property-owner named Black was recorded living in St John's Parrish, Granville. John Green was the sworn chain carrier for the survey.
John Green was in the same tax district as Charles Blackard in the 1766 Bute tax list.
In 1764 , the eastern part of Granville County, NC (St. John's Parish) became Bute County.

Skipping ahead in time to 1777 to a Bute Court order for Charles Black to assist maintaining road in Bute County.

1777 Roadwork Order

Bute County, North Carolina Minutes of the Court of Pleas and
Quarter Sessions, 1767-1779
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13 November 1777 - Ordered that John Jones be Overseer of the road from the foot of Person's road at a place called the Meadows to Joseph Greens Ordinary, and Ordered that he keep the same in repair with his own hands, the hands of Edmond Kearney, Joseph Green, John Thompson, John Acock, William Acock, Charles Black, Jordan Roland, Joseph John Williams, Jeremiah Neale, Thomas Standard and Abner Acock.

I suspect that Charles Black was Charles Blackard II who we found in the 1777 and 1778 Bute tax lists. However, it was clear that he had moved to a different location in Bute in 1778. This record is most likely to be for Charles Blackard II who probably would have been 22 in the year 1777.

I believe that comparing this 1777 road duty record with the others supports this idea. This road was from Mr. Person’s property to Joseph Greens Ordinary (general store) again suggesting that the Blackards lived near Joseph Green.

The analysis of the 1768 deed above suggested that Joseph Green was most-likely to have lived very close to Charles Blackard I in 1768. The 1777 Roadwork Order also included the name Joseph Green and this fixes the course of the road to be very close to Joseph Green and he, in turn, very likely lived extremely close to Charles Blackard I in 1768.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that Green and Blackard were next-door neighbors, but my reasoning was that this was the most-likely place to start the search to identify the neighbors of Charles Blackard in this time period of 1757 to 1768.

The following three Bute County deeds mention Joseph Green and give fairly precise descriptions of the location. The 1767 Joseph Green Deed says specifically that he owned adjoining property.

1767 Joseph Green Deed

JOSEPH GREEN. Wit. JOSIAH GREEN, JESSE PERSON. Proved by JOSIAH GREEN, Bute November Court 1772, BEN McCULLOCH, C.C. Reg. 16 January 1772 (as written), JAMES JOHNSON, P.R.

In addition to Joseph Green, the 1767 deed names Peter Smart from both 1757 and 1766 tax lists with Charles Blackard. The Aycock family is mentioned who also have some members on the 1777 road duty order with Charles Blackard II.

Furthermore, the 1767 deed places the Baptist Meeting House near Joseph Greens adjoining property, and therefore, to Charles Blackard I’s land.

The 1769 deed again mentions the meeting house and Reedy Branch and also names Person and Cooper with adjoining property. Refering back to analysis of the 1768 deed we found William Cooper to have been next after Joseph Green as most likely living adjacent to Charles Blackard I in 1768. A Mr. Person is also named with adjoining property.

The following are some other Bute deeds that describe the activities of Joseph Green that give some more locational information. However, we need to focus on deeds south of Reedy Creek.

PETER SMART

This Granville patent shows that Peter Smart was settled on Melton’s Creek in Granville County before 1761 before this area became part of Bute County. Reference to Smart’s own line indicates this was adjoining other property that he already owned there.

Comparing Smarts deeds to the previous we can add and amend the following landmarks and neighbors:

Melton’s Creek
Baptist Meeting House & spring
John Bobbitt Sr.
Joseph Person
Thomas Daniel
Mr. Byrd(1761 Granville)
Mr. Macon (1761 Granville)

THOMAS HOUSE

“Thomas House of Brunswick” was named on the 1778 Bute tax list with Charles Blackard II. The following 1769 Bute deed again names Peter Smart and an Acock adjoining Joseph Green which definitely places Thomas House in the Meeting House neighborhood. We also have another mention of the Daniel family. Again the Baptist Meeting House is named so that confirms our location.

Possibly an older Thomas House lived next to Charles Blancherd in Merchant’s Hope, Prince George County, Virginia in 1714 and 1721 before they migrated to Brunswick County. There is reason to believe that this Blancherd was actually another Charles Blackard.

Joseph Person, Phillip Self and Willoughby Self were all in the Baptist District tax list with Charles Blackard. The naming of the Baptist District now becomes clear as that was where the Baptist Meeting House was located.

David Rose
William Rose
William Arnold
Mostly we find Rose recorded elsewhere in Bute including Possumquarter Creek. So it doesn’t appear that the Roses were really residents of the Meeting House neighborhood.

CHAMBERLAIN HUDSON

Chamberlain Hudson was in both the 1757 and 1766 tax lists with Charles Blackard.
The following deed transcriptions place Chamberlain adjacent to both Aycock and Mangum on Melton’s and Gunther’s Creeks.

Now, the following deed connects Melton’s creek with people who we have already identified as neighbors of Charles Blackard I including Peter Smart, Joseph Person and William Davis. This confirms that Chamberlain Hudson was also a close neighbor of Charles Blackard I during this time period.

Chamberlain Hudson was documented in this area on another Bute deed in 1773 in addition to Spencer Snow near Mangum and Aycock.

Bute 6-14 10 July 1773 Howell Man to John Jones 100A on Reedy Creek adj Mangum, Acorner formerly Prince.
wit: Spencer Snow, Chamberlain Hudson

Charles Blackard II was the bondsman for Spencer Snow and Frances Self in 1778 and later in 1783 Willoughby Blackard was on the Warren (Bute) tax list adjacent to Spencer Snow.
It is worth mentioning here that this portion of old Granville county which became Bute in 1764 is now located in Warren County, North Carolina. Charles Blackard II was recorded in both the 1777 and 1778 Bute tax lists but appears to have been in different districts. It appears that in 1778 Charles Blackard II moved a short ways south into the portion of Bute that became Franklin County NC in 1779.
Therefore, I believe that while Charles Blackard II was found in Franklin County records, the family homeplace was actually in modern Warren County, North Carolina.

WILLIAM WALKER

William Walker is the first person that I find recorded in the area around Melton’s Creek and Gunter’s Creek where the Meeting House is later built. He was recorded there in a 1751 Granville County Deed before Bute was formed. Earlier we saw that Peter Smart was also there before Bute County existed.

There are relatively few Bute County deeds mentioning William Walker.

Around the time Charles Blackard I arrived in Granville, William Walker preached at a Free Will Baptist Church called the Reedy Creek Church. Before him James Smart preached there. According to NC genealogist, Louise Fuller, at first the church would not allow William Walker to preach because he was not ordained so he went to Charleston SC to be ordained.

Thomas Ownsby seems to have sold Walker the land to build the Baptist Meeting House, though Ownsby lived in Edgecombe/Halifax.

Louise Fuller felt that all these people must have been involved in the church and that Capps was probably the treasurer. She also felt certain that Charles Blackard I attended this church because the people associated with him helped found it.

Elders Charles Daniel, Thomas Daniel and William Lancaster were “raised” in the Reedy Creek Church.

Oddly though, the landmarks Sandy Creek, Cawsway Branck and Gum Branch to not match those used elsewhere to locate the Meeting House. Perhaps there was more than one.

Francis Aycock’s 1765 will was executed by Joseph Person who was more than likely a neighbor, friend and fellow church member.

Will of FRANCIS ACOCK. dated 25 October 1765. recorded in October Court,
1766. Bute County, North Carolina. wife: FRANCIS ACOCK. children of [all
underage] SONS: ROBERT, WILLIAM, MOSES, and JAMES. Daughters: LYDIA,
ANNE, SELAH, DORCAS, and SARAH ACOCK. Excrx: Wife MARY ACOCK; Exec: JOSEPH PERSON. WIT: JOHN PERSON, BENJAMIN COOPER, ANN BRUER. [from Mary Kerr, ABSTRACTED RECORDS OF COLONIAL BUTE COUNTY, NC, 1764 - 1779 AND BUTE COUNTY MARRIAGES, Volume I]

Possibly they spelled both the husband and wife’s named “Francis” and these deeds mentioning Francis Aycock after 1765 are actually referring to the widow.

ALSTON

Edward Moseley was one of the first landowners in the Granville territory and bought up 13,000 acres at one time. Phillip Alston appears to have bought much of this original Moseley land and it was called “Clun Seat.” This was slightly southwest of the Melton’s and Gunther’s Creek area as show on the map above.

The following deeds suggest that the Phillip Alston owned a vast amount of land near where Charles Blackard I lived and starting around 1773 Joseph John Alston of Edgecombe/Halifax starts buying land in that area.

JOHN LETT/DANIEL WELDON

The John Lett who was recorded with Charles Blackard I earlier in Edgecombe County in 1755 did further survey work and was sworn chain carrier on this 1756 Granville deed identifiying the Mr. Weldon found on deeds near Charles Blackard I. The other chain carrier was Robert Brinkley who is found on a 1747 deed naming J. Blacker and James Lett.

Daniel was born in York, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Eaton of Prince George, Virginia on 18 Jan 1753 in Granville, North Carolina.
In 1762 Charles Blackard I witnessed the will of John Lett. It appears that Lett may have lived in another district of Granville/Bute from Blackard, though.

THOMAS BLANCHET

Thomas Blanchet was on both 1757 and 1766 tax lists with Charles Blackard. The following deed places Thomas Blanchet on Gunther’s Creek. However, this seems to be closer the Alston’s Clun Seat estate near Fishing Creek than where the Baptist Meeting House community lived. We don’t know exactly where Charles Blackard lived, however, Thomas Blanchet did not appear to live adjacent to our target individual Joseph Green.

By 1777 many of the previous names seem to be disappearing. Perhap the older landowners have either died or been retired from taxation. However, the following familiar family names are still on the list with Charles Blackard II.

Aycock
Bartholomew
Blackard
Green
Person
Snow
Weldon

On the other hand none, of these family names occur on the 1778 Bute NC Tax List for Richard Williams District where Charles Blackard II lived at that time.

The following study on Granville area churchs may hold some more clues:

I do not find any deeds mentioning a Reedy Fork Primitive Baptist church by name. However, this 1765 Bute deed might be referring to the meeting house that it developed from:

DB-1, page 61. 20 March 1765. WILLIAM JOHNSON, Sheriff, to JOHN BOBBETT, Planter, both of Bute Co. JOHN BOBBIT highest bidder, of 60 Pds. Procl. money, at Sheriff's Sale at County Court, 31 Jan. 1765, for 295 A. of land of HENERY CHAMBLES, sold by Court Order of Superior Court of Halifax, in name of KING GEORGE III, order dated 1 Sept. 1764, ALLAN JONES, Esq., Clerk. Land sold to satisfy debt of HENERY CHAMBLES & HENRY TEMPLE to PETER DAVIS, with interest from 4 June 1764, plus costs & fees. Land in Bute Co., called the meeting house land whereon WILLIAM MANGRUM formerly lived and sold to HENRY CHAMBLES, on Reedy Branch & great Rockey Branch, adj. JOS. GREEN & ACOCK. Debt to PETER DAVIS paid & overplush (sic) applied to debts of HENRY CHAMBELS. Court Order was pursuant to Act of Parliament of Great Britain, in fifth year of reign of his late Majesty KING GEORGE II, for recovery of debts in his Majesty's Plantations & Colonies in America. These entries in the Warren County Will book seems to hint that the Baptist Meeting House was still standing in 1805 since the 1769 deed mentions the Baptist Meeting House and its spring and Reads[Reedy] Creek. Bute was dropped in 1779 and became Warren and Franklin County NC.

JOHN & JOSEPH EDWARDS

I have not thoroughly researched the 1762 tax lists however in the 1762 Granville Co Tax List for the Little Fishing Creek District, Chamberlain Hudson and a John Edwards were recorded.

In the same year, a 1762 land patent shows a Blacker recorded living in Granville on Mill Branch and Tar River adjoining a Joseph Edwards.

However, none these Granville patents or Bute deeds shows a connection to the Meeting House area where Charles was in 1757 and also in 1766. These seem to be more in the Shocco Creek area.

EITHER CHARLES MOVED BETWEEN 1757 AND 1766 AND MOVED BACK OR THIS MAY INDICATE THAT IN 1762 THERE WAS ANOTHER BLACKARD IN BUTE COUNTY LIVING SOMEWHERE OTHER THAN WHERE CHARLES BLACKARD I LIVED! FURTHERMORE, CHARLES BLACKARD II MOVED BACK TO THE SAME AREA IN 1778.

As the following deed suggest, this area would be modern Franklin County where Charles Blackard II appears to have moved in 1778.

MILL CREEK

After several years the people of Edgecombe Precinct succeeded in getting Edgecombe County established by the Assembly of 1741. As its southeastern boundary was the northwest boundary of Beaufort, and later became the boundary of Pitt, it is of interest. It began on Roanoke River at Jenkins Henry's upper corner tree, from there a straight line along the lines of Tyrrell and Beaufort counties to the mouth of Cheek's Mill Creek on Tar River; then from across the river opposite the mouth of the creek, in a straight line unto the middle grounds between the Tar and Neuse rivers.
