Edward Smithwick

1642/1647

Hugh Smithwick is among those listed by William Eyres as persons he had brought into the district (Norfolk Virginia) 1642. (Shaftesbury
Precinct)
A Henry Smithwick had come into Virginia in 1635, but Elizabeth had found no connection between the two men.
Hugh Smithwick was one of the earliest settlers in NC. There is proof that he was in North Carolina before 1661.
He left property in Chowan County to sons Edward and John .
John Smithwick died in 1696, and left his property : half to his wife Hannah and half to his daughter Sarah .
Edward Smithwick seems to be the ancestor of all the North Carolina Smithwicks. He was born in 1647, was very active in the affairs
of the community and seems to have been quite wealthy.
Edward (wife, Africa) had sons: Edward, John, Edmond and Samuel, and a daughter Sarah.
(re. Edward's will Jan.21, 1715-16).
By 1746 the part of the country in which John Smithwick lived had become Bertie County.
Found in Bertie County Deed Book F, page 267, record giving plantation and tract of land to
William Duggan, husband of John's daughter Mary.
